Footbalimericks!

Here’s my take on the ongoing “beautiful game” in the form of limericks, written in their usual rhyme scheme and meter. I was almost through with it this evening when Brazil crashed out unceremoniously, and I had to change some of the verses. I am posting it before there are any further upset, forcing me to re-write my lines!   Enjoy!

It’s here! And my, it has been four years down!

For sure, it did not kick off in Cape Town

But it’s time for Africa

Oh yes, I know, Shakira

Thirty two teams are in for the showdown!

In J S C they started the group stage

And for some teams it did turn a new page

But none to go bananas

For honoured host Bafanas

Yet, they bowed with a win and goodwill grace!

As teams left the first round with a dance

It was sheer pain for Italy and France

‘From World Cup Heroes

To World Cup Zeroes!’

Cried the broadcaster who seemed in a trance

The North Ks rose from their old catacomb

But none could spare them the approaching doom

Near dozen goals thereafter

They are adept I gather

Only with balls that go up with a boom!

Japan had to fly the Asian flag high

But Komano’s ball which went for the sky

Sounded the death knell

And rained tears of hell

As the Samurais bid a painful bye

Then there were the lions from England

For whom goals have become hard to land

Shoddy refereeing or not

There’s little that England’s got!

Hey! Anyone with a magic wand?

The Spanish side strode out with pomp and fare

But the Swiss knives did cut them wide and bare

Say ¡Hola! Seńoras

Or Hey ¿Cómo estás?

The Reds are well into this grand affair!

Maradona will go strong with his gun

But the Luftwaffe will be hard to outrun

If heir apparent Messi

Ceases to be so messy

Lord, we are in for Diego’s naked run!

Will it be the Samba Kings once again?

To lift the trophy and pop the champagne

It’s their “Joga bonito”

But shocks of shocks, and ditto!

It was just an excruciating campaign!

So some more days with the beautiful game

And it could be anyone’s fame or shame

Jabulani- that’s unsettling

Or Vuvuzelas grating

O, It’s Africa’s share of glowing flame!
