Buddhist sans Buddhism – Indifference with a Difference

An old dilapidated weather-beaten man takes a time out from his pressing farming chores at home, walks all the way from his remote hamlet and finally directs himself into one of the myriad offices, in all humility. He instantly sees contempt and derision in the eyes of some of the personnel within. The rest don’t even care to acknowledge the presence of a fellow being who has ushered himself into this supposedly hallowed sanctum of service. Some fifteen minutes later one of the inmates manages to fish out some papers from a binder, takes one smug glance before announcing the futility of the old man’s visit, and guffaws at his misery. His colleagues – chuckle in, revealing a couple or two of their doma-stained teeth, huddled around a crackling bukhari.

Nonsensical Snippets

Some talk and walk, some walk and talk. Except dumb, we all talk; unless paralyzed, we all walk. This ‘walk and talk’ slogan isn’t identified with any political party anywhere. No party affiliation. Shakyamuni may be long gone. We may be in a degenerate era. But his voluminous teachings are alive if not kicking. A Buddhist myself, I cannot fathom the depth and pith of all his teachings. But every so often I am reminded of his warning because it’s omnipresent. He warned that no one person can fully understand another person. It’s not rocket science; anybody can grasp the potent warning.

2008: An Epoch-making Year of Destiny in the Land of Gross National Happiness

“My father, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and I hereby return to our people the power that had been vested in our Kings by our forefathers one hundred years ago”, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck addressed the joint sitting of parliament on 08 May 2008. Historically reminiscent of 17 December 1907, one hundred years ago, when the people of Bhutan, our forefathers wholeheartedly and unanimously swore the oath of allegiance to Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck enthroning Him as the first hereditary King of Bhutan, it is unthinkable today, 2008, one hundred years on, that the sacred power is being handed down to the grandchildren, of Their Majesties own accord.
